11:00am Program
On Wednesday, September 2nd, Beth Owen, President of RGC over the next two years, will take you on part of her African journey where she and her Ugandan friends created a bountiful food program. Afterwards, club members and guests will meet Committee Chairs, hear about upcoming events and fun activities planned for the year. Signup for monthly outings, learn about gardens we nurture, classes we teach and places that we invest our time and energy throughout Raleigh. Bring your questions and ideas to the people who can help and if we can we’ll make it happen!
Benjamin Briggs will talk about how Preservation North Carolina protects historic landscapes and gardens using protective covenants. This important work will preserve historic places for the future and the people of NC.
Dennis and Georgina Werner have gardened in this location for almost 40 years. The talk will feature some of their favorite plants that have graced their garden for many years.
Ericka will be speaking on "Home for the Holidays" and offering fresh cut greenery decorating ideas for holiday-themed wreaths, bundled mistletoe, mailbox swags and dining centerpieces. They will also discuss maintenance and longevity tips, key plant and flower combinations and most importantly having fun with florals!
John Dole, Professor of Horticultural Science at NCSU, will start with a brief history of the rose, continuing to modern commercial roses and a tour of US and global cut rose production. He will finish with a quick exploration of rose research at NC State, including how to make your cut roses last longer.
This month we will explore the growing field of therapeutic horticulture and the age-old truth that gardening is good for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. Amy Fee Bruzzichesi, MSW, HTR, will share an overview of this rewarding practice, which purposefully uses plants and gardens to improve mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. We will learn about her role and the exciting work happening right here in North Carolina, while taking a quick look back at how garden clubs played a role in building this type of work.
RGC monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month, September through June, at the NC State University Club on Hillsborough Street, 10:30am - 1:00pm.
